What is Resveratrol?

What is Resveratrol? As if we need another reason for that much enjoyed glass of red. There are actually many benefits that can come from wine, the reason being is that it is high in resveratrol – the anticancer, anti-aging, endurance boosting polyphenol compound that occurs naturally  in both red and white wines, blueberries, peanuts, grapes and is also made in a supplement form.  Resveratrol isn’t as popular as it should be so unfortunately many of us aren’t reaping the benefits as yet but read on and find out the potential of this miraculous substance!

Resveratrol is an antioxidant which can actually prevent and stop the growth of cancer cells in the body by attacking them directly. It does this by inducing cancer cell death by recoding the cancer cells themselves. In certain studies it has also shown to improve the success of chemotherapy and reduce nasty side effects. Resveratrol can also help oxygenate and restore healthy cells which can also kill cancer cells.

Again, due to the antioxidant properties of resveratrol, it can help you to age more gracefully, it promotes a healthy inflammatory response and relives the body of some of the oxidative stress that can lead to premature aging.

In a Canadian study those who were supplementing with resveratrol showed similar skeletal muscle benefits as those who did endurance training, these results included higher endurance, an increase in oxidative metabolism and an enhanced cardiac function. An even higher boost of these benefits is shown when both performing endurance training together with resveratrol supplementation.

  1. Eyesight

Vision loss is unfortunately something that happens as we age but it is shown that resveratrol can counteract this common occurrence. As you know now it is full of antioxidants and these are what prevent oxidative stress that lead to vision loss due to aging. It can also prevent the growth of abnormal blood vessels that can be damaging to our eyes.

Another aging side effect is loss of testosterone which can start in our thirties. This not only affects men but women too, decline in testosterone can affect our sex lives, our weight and many other functions. Resveratrol may be an alternate option to hormone therapy if you are notice a testosterone decline. A study has shown that blood testosterone levels were improved by 50% after just 28 days of supplementation.
